Motivated to dispel the stereotypes cast by years of conflict and grim headlines, Nour first sought to showcase Syrian artwork. Her mission was to reveal a side of Syria distanced from politics and war.

Nour’s gallery embraces diversity and fosters creativity through extensive collaborations. Now boasting partnerships with over 30 artists from an array of cultural backgrounds, Nour curates a tapestry of global artistic expressions.
The gallery offers an eclectic mix that caters to diverse tastes and artistic appetites. Recently, Nour expanded its horizon by forging alliances with several prestigious galleries located in the south of France, a region celebrated for its rich artistic heritage and vibrant cultural scene. This strategic move allows Nour to present a broader spectrum of art styles, ensuring that the gallery meets the nuanced preferences of its discerning clientele.

A Gallery’s Vision Sets the Course

As Artexpo New York presents its 46th edition at Pier 36 in Manhattan’s trending Lower East Side, a new addition has been made to the acclaimed fair programming: The Visionaries. Each Visionary is selected by Artexpo’s curatorial team based on three factors:

Unswerving representation of artist innovators, consistently bringing forward-thinking cutting-edge art to the fair

Articulate and distinctive presentation of each artist’s work, exceeding all display guidelines

Consistent exhibition at the fair over a period of three or more years

From the amazing list of exhibitors, Artexpo’s curators present the inaugural group of Visionaries — an acclaimed group of exhibitors giving Artexpo attendees a first-hand opportunity to see and collect incredible original art.

This year’s Artexpo New York takes place March 30-April 2, 2023, at Manhattan’s newest destination for art, Pier 36. Each year, the fair’s special programs range from immersive artist-led Art Lab experiences to compelling Art Talks and exciting Meet the Artist sessions.

Check out the 2023 Artexpo New York Visionaries. Don’t miss their exceptional exhibit and artists!

Tribes Art Africa Gallery (TAAG) was founded in 2001 by Rodney Asikhia and is now recognized as the Rodney Asikhia Gallery. The gallery is driven by a passion for beauty and quality in art. This quality is reflected in the works selected and in their handling and presentation. As its name indicates, one of its driving philosophies and missions is the promotion of art from Africa and the African diaspora. To this end, it has represented well over a hundred African artists in the 20 years since its founding. Rodney Asikhia, the gallery founder, believes that African artists and all other artists of color have important stories to tell and unique viewpoints to share.

In addition to this, the work of the gallery is aimed at addressing and correcting the racial bias that leaves black artists and black art underrepresented in many art institutions around the world. It also emphasizes the importance of visual arts to communities by organizing public programs, lectures, symposia, forums, and the like. All of these also ensure that the promotion and sale of artworks are met with critical engagement and appreciation. TAAG Gallery specializes in artist management, art collections, art management, art sale, art leasing, industry reports, auctions, and art commissions.

Featured Artists

At their booth at the Artexpo Dallas 2022, TAAG will be showing the works of 6 artists: Daniel Gyekyi Gyan, Sisqo Ndombe, Madoti Oluwadamilare, Bara Sketchbook, Kelani Fatai, and Wilson Imini. Several of the works being exhibited are figurative and portrait paintings featuring black subjects. The paintings, in style, composition and theme, explore personhood, identity, urbanity, strength, human beauty, personal history and individual agency.

Daniel Gyekyi Gyan

Daniel Gyekyi Gyan, Versil, 2022, Acrylic and modeling paste on canvas, 50 × 50 inches.
Daniel Gyekyi Gyan is a Ghanaian artist currently living and working in Accra, Ghana. Gyan studied at Accra’s Ghanatta College of Art and Design. He graduated in 2008 and took to painting in earnest. The sources of his inspiration derive from his immediate neighbourhood, the internet, fashion, models and urban culture. His canvases bear all these influences, as he strives to bring into every piece as much of his world as he can.

Madoti Oluwadamilare

Madoti Oluwadamilare is a contemporary artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. He taught himself and mastered his art through practice and consistency. Inspired by his environment, his paintings capture the struggle of individuals who try to be upright amidst the harsh reality surrounding them. His paintings are bright-colored and show figures with flower or lightbulb heads. His clean lines, great facility with color, and carefully selected contemporary backgrounds express a range of moods: self-assured, thoughtful, calm, flummoxed, and cheerful.

Sisqo Ndombe

Sisquo Ndombe, Manuela, 2022, Acrylic on canvas, 128 × 98 cm. Courtesy of the artist and Rodney Asikhia Gallery

Sisqo Ndombe is a Congolese artist who makes figurative paintings with magical realist or surrealist elements. His work makes use of bright colors and shows subjects with ecstatic gazes. This may be read as a celebration of self and of identity. His paintings with their pairings of dual figures, with their holding of cockerels and flowers, speak to inheritance, beauty, complexity, and African spirituality.

Kelani Fatai

Kelani Fatai is a young Nigerian artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. He studied painting and design at the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos. His works are figurative paintings with a strong focus on portraits of women dressed in fashionable clothes. Very notably, the backgrounds in his paintings are covered in flowers. The realism and strongly aesthetic quality of his paintings, done in a style reminiscent of Kehinde Wiley, give them their great appeal.

Bara Sketchbook

Bara Sketchbook, The sons of Wilde and wilden, 2022, Acrylic on canvas, 60 × 48 in (152.4 × 121.9 cm).
Bara Sketchbook is a painter whose works are done in strong and vivid neon colours. The subjects of his painting are often presented in intimate poses, and from how much character he infuses through the use of colours and intense gazes, one can surmise that they have strong, complex personalities. He, very pointedly, is a painter of illustrious figures.

Wilson Imini is a young painter based in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. His interests and œuvre are focused on figurative paintings of famous figures in which he blends life portraiture with imagination. The paintings are done in bright—or more appropriately, bold colours. There are large swathes of sky and grass and intense young faces tinged red. The figures in the paintings are self-assured and powerful, occupying a central world in which all forces and influences seem to belong to and revolve around them.

Rodney Asikhia will be exhibiting at Booth 114 at Artexpo Dallas from September 16 – 18, 2022.

One of the top urban art galleries in the nation, End to End, E2E is a Graffiti & Street Art term that refers to a huge graffiti piece that covers a wall from one end to the other. On a subway train, it refers to a piece that covers the entire train, end to end. The street abbreviation is E2E.

This lexicon has been the inspiration behind End to End Gallery in their downtown Hollywood, Florida, gallery. Jeremiah Heller, owner and curator, created the space to feature a curated collection of modern and urban contemporary art from his own personal collection. It truly embodies the meaning of the E2E term and creates a unique viewing and rich collector experience.

Heller has developed a loyal following for the hottest urban artists on the planet. From Banksy and Mr. Brainwash to Martin Whatson, Kaws, and Kai, the End to End exhibition at Artexpo Dallas will be an impressive and newsworthy booth.

Catalyst Contemporary is pleased to premiere at Art San Diego and to introduce our artists to the West Coast. They are a fine art gallery focusing on contemporary art that tells stories. Located in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood – the cultural heart of the city, Catalyst forges relationships between artists, collectors, and both creative and civic-minded individuals.

Catalyst will be showcasing five artists at this year’s fair including Alberto Cavalieri, Se Jong Cho, Brian P. Miller, James von Minor, and Arthur Jedson Smalley.

Alberto Cavalieri

Alberto Cavalieri s a Venezuelan visual artist who, throughout his long career, has achieved renown for his monumental sculptures and public works integrated into architectural forms. His oxidized sculptures and digital drawings deal mostly with the paradox between form and matter, as well as the duality between the essence of a material, and its visual possibilities.

Metal allows him to create an overriding paradox between matter and form. It enables him to create sinuous forms that are full of life and movement, which contrast diametrically to the rigidity and structure of the steel used to make them. Knots are a metaphor for life and one of the abstract forms used. And its multiple symbolisms enrich his work and increase its scope and resonance. Knots imply human activity and have different symbolic connotations in terms of how they are used, to the point that the connotations could be contradictory and/or ambivalent.

Se Jong Cho

Se Jong Cho is an environmental engineer and self-taught painter who embraces science’s counterpoint: art and creativity. She paints forms that offer intriguing entryways into the surreal, an art form that is equally concerned with reality (based in science) and with the mind’s unconscious thoughts (where creativity exists). In surrealist art, one finds juxtaposed objects and settings that make no sense. But the Surrealists were also interested in those scenarios as pathways to the unconscious and subconscious—in their terms, into one’s dreams—for in dreams one’s true nature is revealed. Fascinated by botany and the sun, Cho finds poetry in the intermingling of science and artistic creativity.

Her works sit at this intersection of dreams and reality. Cho’s paintings featuring eclipses and other celestial bodies remind us that the sun is life-sustaining, and eclipses are a spectacular and unusual reminder of its centrality. In her work, the sun brings together concerns about the fragility of human existence in a world and universe that we have no hope of controlling. It is also a universal presence in our human experience, tying our prehistoric origins to our future.

Brian P. Miller

Brian P. Miller is a photographic-based artist steeped in all aspects and history of the medium. With a Mercurial disposition, his explorations in photography flit from one idea to another and back again. As a photographer, he is drawn to the moment of image-making – of light impressing upon silver, as a contemplative exercise where synchronicity exists between that which lies within and the outward perception.

Using traditional and new imaging techniques alike, Miller works with a process that suits the needs of the work at hand. “Alt/Arc” is a series begun in 2017 and focuses on dissolving the evidence of photographic, reducing the lens and film-based imagery to graphic impressions. The brightly colored and sometimes tessellating lines and shapes in this work celebrate and call attention to urban architecture and the spatial relationships it generates as an overwhelming array of abstraction.

James von Minor

James von Minor is a Maryland-based artist who is internationally known for his paintings, drawings, constructions, and sculptural installations. In his work, abstract, organic forms integrate into geometric patterns and shapes. These seemingly opposite styles depend on a delicate juggling act of balance, shape, color, and pattern. Humans are predisposed to look for dualities as an organizing principle; for every idea, there is a counter idea. But Von Minor suggests that this is an artificial concept in need of deconstructing.

He has dedicated his lengthy career to uncovering ways to move beyond the limitations of that duality-based thinking. The inspiration for this body of work is the Islamic architecture of southern Spain in which strict, rational, logical geometries are coupled with decorative, organic calligraphy and plant forms. In his work, Von Minor unifies concept and experience, as well as geometric and organic. In addition, the artist questions the nature of painting, drawing, and sculpture. Most of his work merges qualities of all these classical approaches: the paintings are sculptural, sculptures are painterly, etc. Von Minor blurs these boundaries to construct a new union of pattern and organic abstraction.

Arthur Jedson Smalley

Arthur Jedson Smalley is an artist who is deeply committed to the balancing act of control and chance. In fact, it is an essential part of his creativity. Smalley makes sculptures in wood, using both found and milled lumber, which form organic Möbius strips, and paintings of landscapes using latex house paints dripped from brushes attached to long sticks. The tension between the artist’s hand and the inherent tendencies of the medium tips one way or the other within the course of making the work. It is only in the struggle between artist and material that Smalley is uncomfortable enough to be comfortable with the results.

Smalley starts his paintings with a particular landscape in mind, one that he is deeply familiar with and visits often to study its forms and the way light plays across its features (only very rarely does he paint en plein air). Working with the painting surface (he uses artists’ board not canvas) lying on the floor, Smalley drips colors onto the board, all the while trying to control what that daubs or drips do. Because of the length of the tool of application and the viscosity of the paints, Smalley must embrace the pooling of the paint, accepting and counting on any accidents. He says, “paintings are compromises,” and admits that he tries to paint from his subconscious, letting go of any predetermined ideas save for the generalized landscape giving it visual structure.

Catalyst Contemporary will be exhibiting September 9-11. 2022 at Art San Diego, booth #313.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we are delighted to feature Art Gallery Inc, a Dallas-based art gallery committed to supporting local female artists.

Art Gallery Inc. does more than sell affordable contemporary art, they provide a platform and opportunity to share the talent of professional female artists. In fact, every piece sold at the gallery provides a channel to give back and 10% of their art sales are donated to a cause. Aside from their charitable donations, the gallery also hosts art contests, which enable women to receive visibility and new opportunities to promote their work.

“…The truth is that women have never been treated equally in the art world, and today they remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses. Counting and quantifying won’t solve discrimination, but statistics are useful for understanding the scope of the problem.” says Art Gallery Inc. Director, Julia Ross.

Aside from helping female artists daily, this incredible art gallery has recently donated to women shelters and homeless women during the Texas snowstorm. “We are so grateful that through art sales supporting women artists we were also able to give back and help other women in need”, says Ross.

Art Gallery Inc. also recently partnered with In My Shoes, a non-profit organization in Dallas providing community living with a safe environment that focuses on assisting women who are pregnant and homeless. The organization helps women by providing them with tools to search for jobs and parenting and budgeting tips.

Female artists can apply to become a featured artist at Art Gallery Inc. Currently, the gallery is showcasing the works of Sharon Grimes, Darya Farral, Regina Davis, Kiki Winters, Julia Ross, Kelly Gowan, Victoria Moore, Jessica M Chaix, Rosemary Riddle-Achelpohl, Jill Danahey, Daniela Pasqualini, Leslie Merrill, Lu Pearl, and Kimberly Christopher.

With a successful launch at Art San Diego 2019 Contemporary Art Show, The ArtScope presents the culmination of Khachik’s passion, background, and experiences in fine art and the art market, which we explore in more detail as we spotlight The ArtScope origin story.

Tell us about The ArtScope. Why did you decide to start it?

The ArtScope was born out of my lifelong dream to become an advocate for professional artists to help them navigate the complex business side of the art market. The ArtScope is here to empower artists through our commitment to propel their careers to the next level while at the same time guiding our clients through the art-buying and collecting process in a seamless manner.

Growing up with an artist father, I saw firsthand the challenges a career in fine art entails. As a young child, I often accompanied my father to the Armenian painters’ vernissage at Saryan Park in Yerevan, Armenia (Vernissage). These weekend trips to Vernissage that put food on our table in the nineties were also my first glimpse into the business side of the art world. I witnessed artist-dealer, artist-gallery, and artist-collector dynamics at Vernissage which sparked my initial interest in art business.

Now, more than a decade after I entered the art world in the U.S., I am excited to have The ArtScope be a part of an art world that is rapidly moving towards expanding the online presence of galleries. The resulting transparency in the market will help bring artists to the table as their art is put out on the market. It will also invite new participants to engage with the art world as has already been happening in the past couple of months.

Why launch The ArtScope at an art fair, namely, Art San Diego 2019?

When the opportunity presented to showcase The ArtScope at Art San Diego 2019, we were already looking at finding the right venue to introduce The ArtScope in an appropriate physical space. I had previously already curated booths at the LA Art Show and Artexpo New York, so I was also looking to expand into other fairs and cities.

It is important to emphasize that while we are an online platform, we do not discount the significance of viewing art in person in order to fully appreciate all the intricacies of an artist’s technique as well as the message. We work closely with our clients to ensure they are able to fully engage with the artist’s work prior to purchasing it if they have not seen it in person previously.

Because we are based in Los Angeles but wanted to also expand to other art hubs in Southern California without having to compromise the ability to provide this personalized service upon request, San Diego proved to be the right direction for The ArtScope. The city’s vibrant art scene and proximity to Los Angeles as we were introducing the gallery in a physical space made the decision an easy one.

What are your thoughts on the art fair model in the current state of the art world, which has been so drastically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

I am encouraged to see the market adapt so quickly to what many of us have seen for a long time now as the path forward, but I do not think the art fair model is defunct. Nor should it be. I think the opposite will happen. More galleries will likely adopt our model of being an online art gallery or marketplace with physical presence at established art fairs to enable in-person engagement with their artists’ work. Before Art San Diego 2019, we had proposed this model to Richard Ferrante, who now leads Art Dallas Contemporary Art Fair, and are happy to see it implemented through the newly launched Redwood Art Group online art platform.

What are the goals of The ArtScope and what sets it apart from other online art galleries and platforms?

It is my core belief that making the right placement of an artwork has to come first and foremost from a place of deep connection with and appreciation for the art itself, not a conversation with me. This is what makes us different. If you are a young collector or a first-time buyer who would rather go online and purchase a piece of fine art that you like, without ever talking to a gallery representative, we enable you to do so on our website with ease. We do not make engagement with gallery staff a prerequisite to buying art. However, if you are a collector who wishes to engage with us and receive a more personalized service, we are here to do that for you. What sets us apart is that the choice is entirely yours, not ours.

Who will run The ArtScope?

Currently, The ArtScope is run by a team of two, including myself as Director and Naré G. Aleksanyan, as Co-Director and Art Advisor. Between the two of us, The ArtScope is well-positioned to cater to our artists’ as well as our buyers’ and collectors’ needs, with experience and background in art business, artist representation, art and cultural property as well as business law. Our goal is to best represent our artists’ interests and to guide our clients through an informed decision-making process as the two groups engage with the art market.

What is next for The ArtScope?

I am committed to making The ArtScope a premier fine art platform that is devoted to propelling the artistic careers of a diverse roster of professional artists who are looking for a new model of gallery representation. What we will look for in artists as we begin to expand our roster is first and foremost the quality of art submitted, based on traditional connoisseurship principals. We will then consider a demonstrated commitment to being a professional visual artist, based on a holistic review process, which will include an interview and a detailed analysis of the artist’s body of work.

We are always interested in exploring the contemporary art scene as it evolves. Artists, being the driving force behind it, are of primary interest to The ArtScope and are encouraged to contact us for representation and collaborations. We are currently focused on the following geographic areas:

Southern California (within 150 miles from Los Angeles)

Oahu, Hawai‘i

We also welcome collaborations with gallery owners, art dealers, curators, and creative professionals. We invite submissions and inquiries to The ArtScope at art@theartscope.com.
