Having worked as an architect for forty years, Bill says he has contributed to the transformation of the New Mexico landscape. His sharp sense of composition, structure, and balance from working in architecture gives a definite perspective to his art. Simple geometry and powerful form with an emphasis on the significance of the relationship between interior (positive) and exterior (negative) space define his design approach. Bill says he picked up the ability to think and see globally. His abstract paintings arouse feelings of solidity, substance, and emotion. The spectacular visual contrasts of the high desert Southwest serve as his inspiration.

Vivienne Riggio has a comprehensive portfolio that documents her artistic journey and accomplishments. The most recent works are large scale mythical creatures that connect us to another time, another place, each emphasizes the intricate details and vibrant colors that define her style. Drawing on her experience in operatic costume design, she creates shaman-like sculptures that evoke a departure from conventional imagery to an unfamiliar place of wonder. Each piece created by Vivienne is accompanied by insightful descriptions and contextual background, allowing a better understanding of her inspiration and creative processes. These pieces transcend the cultures we think of as the norm, the ordinary, the customary, and take our imaginations to a place of our own invention.

In the fascinating world of digital art and photography, emerges the remarkable work of Alex Funes Lovis, originally from Mexico born on November 8, 1966, a passionate Plastic Artist whose creativity transcends conventional limits. Through his lens, he captures the very essence of iconic places around the world, transforming images and textures into authentic masterpieces that resonate with the depth of lived experience.

The work of Alex Funes Lovis is characterized by his ability to fuse the rich visual heritage of the places he has visited with sacred geometric elements, vibrant colors and the mystique of numerology.
A: My philosophy as a visual artist, photographer and creator of digital art focuses on the deep search for internal knowledge through sacred geometry. I believe that art has the power to transcend mere intellectual appreciation and can touch people’s hearts and souls in a deep and meaningful way.

For me, sacred geometry is a visual language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. It is a tool that I use to explore the relationship between geometric structures and the essence of existence. Through these shapes, I seek to represent the harmony and underlying connection that exists in the universe. Sacred geometry becomes a vehicle for contemplation and meditation, a way to explore the nature of reality and consciousness.

Alissa Van Atta is currently based just outside Asheville, NC and is a mixed media painter and ceramist. Alissa is inspired by texture, nature and unique surface treatments in her abstract artworks. In 2022, sparked by the overturning of Roe v. Wade, figures emerged in her paintings. Feminist themes are subtly explored with a neo-pop art style inspired from vintage advertising, pin-up girls and commercial art from the 1950s – 1970s.

Alissa has participated in exhibitions and art fairs in the past few years to further expand her exposure across multiple markets. “The most rewarding part is meeting people that are attracted to my work and I get to connect to people over my pieces and the stories behind them.”

From childhood, Anastasiia has been drawn to math, geometry, and unseen concepts. Later in her older years searching for life answers esoterics came to her life and she developed a sense of living life through the aesthetics of every day. And in one of the dark moments of her life, she found a glimpse of light in connection with all things through art and expression of beauty, geometry, mystery, and interconnection of all things. That was a touch of higher guidance sending a message to her that we are not alone and always have been guided and protected. And this guidance started to be expressed through sacred geometry.

Her enigmatic artistic journey began as a kaleidoscope of curiosity and exploration. From the very first brushstroke, she fell in love with the beauty and intricacies of sacred geometry. Like a blossoming flower, their artistic path unfolded, guided by patterns, symmetry, and a profound reverence for the hidden mysteries of the universe. She immersed herself in the study of ancient cultures, seeking wisdom from past civilizations that honored and revered the power of sacred geometry. Over time, her artist work transformed into a mesmerizing tapestry of vibrant colors and meticulously crafted shapes.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: The philosophy behind sacred geometry is all about finding beauty and meaning in the geometric patterns that exist in nature and the universe. It believes that these patterns are not random but hold a sacred, underlying order.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: Nature’s Magic: Taking a close look at the mesmerizing patterns found in flowers, seashells, and even the structure of the universe itself. The Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio are all around us, just waiting to be transformed into sacred geometry art.

Ancient Wisdom: Diving into the vast knowledge of ancient cultures, like the Egyptians, Mayans, or Greeks, who incorporated sacred geometry into their art, architecture, and religious beliefs.

Meditation and Reflection: Finding stillness within myself and letting my mind wander. Sacred geometry can be a portal to inner peace and spirituality. Exploring the depths of my thoughts and emotions, and translating them into symbolic shapes and patterns.

Music and Sound: Letting the rhythm and melodies guide my creative process. Turning on some inspiring tunes or exploring the harmonious vibrations of specific frequencies. Allow the music to flow through me and influence my artwork.

Personal Meaning: What aspects of sacred geometry resonate with me on a deeper level? Is it the balance, unity, or complexity? Connecting with the meaning and symbolism that speaks to my soul, and infusing it into my art. The greatest inspiration lies within myself. Trusting my intuition, play with shapes and colors, and let my imagination run wild.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: Probably the best advice I’ve received was to learn to trust yourself and your intuition. Not to be afraid of the unknown. Just calm your mind, come back to yourself and you will find all the answers within.

Q: What does exhibiting at Spectrum Miami 2023 mean to you?

A: The exhibition of my sacred geometry art is a truly special milestone for me! It’s a chance for me to share my unique perspective and expression of sacred geometry with others. I think of it as a magical moment where my art takes on a life of its own, spreading joy, curiosity, and appreciation to those who have the privilege of experiencing it. So, I’m embracing this opportunity with excitement and confidence, knowing that my art has the power to inspire and captivate others. And feel so grateful for this amazing opportunity.

“Within the Square of my canvas, I show the world in a fish can. My artwork is message-oriented. Vibrant colors, humor, and the joy of telling stories lure the observer into a world of its own. My koi express their feelings and state of mind but still keep their fishy appearance.

My artwork draws you in and challenges you to think about society, politics, and culture, about our values and how we implement them. I do not want to scare observers off by negativity, but attract their interest with humor and vibrant colors and let them discover what I am trying to express.

The initial idea runs like an undercurrent through my subconscious until it has matured and can be put down in a rough sketch to determine formal design, light, and shadow. I start to fill in the details, elaborating fish portrayals, often including some funny eye-catchers. The process is fluid and new ideas are included. I paint in oils and cover the canvas with one first layer, deciding upon color and illumination. Then the long process of putting on more thin layers of paint, thus intensifying color and volume, begins.

My work is a constant search to express my ideas about the world I live in, the statement oscillating in the polarity between joy, laughter, anger, and sadness.”

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: I am concerned about the world I live in and my themes are political, philosophical, social, cultural, etc. The ideas of how to express those themes pop into my mind at 4 or 5 a.m. For example in the “American Dream, “ the koi close to their leader are white, the ones in the less advantaged places, squeezed under the lid are darker, red, and black and not well equipped (rifles). It shows white supremacy and racism. The pledge to defend democracy is counter-phrased by the halo of automatic rifles and guns around the president’s head. With the koi in cans, I can criticize with humor and irony, with vibrant colors and high technical quality.

“If my art has nothing to do with people’s pain and sorrow, what is art for?”

“I think art is a very important weapon to achieve human freedom.”

Those quotes from Ai Weiwei say what my motivation for painting is.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: Artists like Caravaggio, Tiepolo, Veronese, Velasquez, and Goya inspired me. I love to study their multi-layered meaningful compositions, the way they handle light and shadow, and how they achieve depth and volume. I admire the sense of Humor Banksy and the stark impact of Ai Weiwei’s concert hall pillars in Berlin wrapped in swim vests.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: “You don’t have to please anybody, but yourself!” (my husband). So I paint what I have to „say“, not looking on easy sales or mainstream art.”

Q: What does exhibiting at Spectrum Miami 2023 mean to you?

A: The Art Scene in America is very lively and diverse. It was such a pleasure to attend finally (waiting 3 years) the ArtExpo New York earlier. The positive and encouraging feedback was great. On top of that PopArt belongs to the cultural self-image of Americans. I feel at home in your country and to show my art at Spectrum Miami is a great honor to me.

Antoine de Villiers (South African, 1977) is one of life’s travelers and blessed with an artist’s soul. Antoine works in many mediums, yet, there is always something quintessential of her throughout the core of her work, like a wick in a candle drawing her creations out. During a difficult childhood as a daughter of parents struggling with mental illness, Antoine was in a devastating motorcycle accident that claimed the life of her friend/driver. Days later, the diary she kept meticulously for years was stolen and she lost her medium of expression. It is then that Antoine found her artistic voice and art became a means of survival.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: I want my work to be visceral, honest, and vulnerable. Early in my career, I was drawn to the human figure as my world came crashing down amid my struggle with severe depression. I found exploring the complexities of human emotion freeing and using the subject of the figure as a means of expression. While I felt emotionally and physically out of control, my work became autobiographical and gave me much-needed relief. Philosopher Alain de Botton said that art can ‘help us to be less lonely’ and that is exactly the role it played in my life. My figures are nude, as that is the most honest and vulnerable we can be. They are usually anonymous to help empathize with the emotion captured rather than the identity of the subject. But ultimately, as William Kentridge aptly noted, no matter what subject you choose, it will always be a self-portrait.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

I love art and can never get enough of it. From old masters like da Vinci and Turner. Modernists like O’Keeffe and Hepworth, but most of all, contemporary artists like Jenny Saville, Harry Paul Ally and Yulia Bas.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: “Turn your pain into purpose”

Q: What does exhibiting at Spectrum Miami 2023 mean to you?

A: I had the privilege to exhibit at Spectrum Miami in 2021. It marked the ‘relaunch’ of my career -not long after my return to the US after living in India for 5 years and teaching art to children living in slums and brothels. This year I’m grateful to be able to return to Miami once again and I’m very excited. I believe my work has grown and I can’t wait to show 20 new pieces never exhibited before.

BRINTON FARRAND

Brinton Farrand is from Indianapolis, Indiana. He received a teaching degree from Purdue University and a Master’s in Art Education from DePauw University. He taught High School Art and Photography for over 30 years, and while teaching he was the recipient of a Lilly Endowment Grant. He studied classical realism at Studio Escalier in France for three months with Timothy Stotz and Michelle Tully. After retiring, he studied painting at Herron Art School in Indianapolis with Professor Marc Jacobson and independently with artist David Slonim. He continually expands his skills through classes and experimenting in his studio and enjoys presenting in multiple shows and venues where he can talk to the public about his work.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: As a young man, I competed in High School and College Wrestling. To succeed and be the best, I drilled, practiced, and trained relentlessly. I took that work ethic into my teaching and coaching career. When I retired from teaching, I might say I ‘refired’ myself into a successful artist. I explore myself and the world around me, using new tools and techniques. My goal is to continuously learn from the past artists as well as the new artists of the 21st century. I enjoy storytelling and searching for creativity; that is what I enjoy most in my life. After all, those who are creative and can improvise, adapt, and overcome will succeed in this new age.

My work philosophy is to paint or draw every day. I love drawing with pen and ink. The power of a single line can tell so much of the story of a painting. Color and contrasting through colors is my favorite aspect to work on. Color and line work continue to be central themes. A few years ago I saw an artist using dribbled layers of color and decided to experiment with it. Each color has a different characteristic of dribble. The line can be fat or thin and the paint may drip fast or slow. Dribbling has taught me to make mistakes and be freer with my painting. It has evolved into something unique.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: Camille Pissarro – He painted every day and was not afraid to explore new styles as they came along.

Van Gogh – A painter who was strongly influenced by color.

Edgar Degas – An artist trying to capture motion with his dancers.

Salvador Dali – He is my favorite because of his technical skill and he was not afraid to explore art in any direction.

Johannes Vermeer – I like how easily he portrayed the effect of light on a subject.

Eduardo Kobra – He is my newest inspiration, a Brazilian street artist known for his use of vibrant colors.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

Find the best, copy what the best are doing, and then “plus” it.

Do not wait for inspiration. Amateurs wait for inspiration, the rest of us get up and get to work.

Do not think when you paint.

When I am not painting you can find me walking outside in nature each morning. I enjoy sitting and listening to music as I observe the seasons changing. The absolute best thing is to sit in a bar and watch people, yet even then my sketchbook is out to catch the moment.

Q: What does exhibiting at Spectrum Miami 2023 mean to you?

A: To be involved in Art Basel/Miami Week – the biggest art festival in the world – is truly exciting. Even before participating, we came to Miami to see the art and be inspired. My favorite venue was Spectrum because the artists seemed to be the friendliest of all the venues, very eager to explain their work and share their thoughts. To be surrounded by so many talented artists and friends is truly inspiring and a great learning experience.

CHRISTINE LAUBACH

Christine is a passionate painter from the US, Eastern Shore of Maryland. Born in Washington DC she has always had a deep connection with art. As the youngest of 7 she was influenced by the Artists and Scientists in her family. She fell in love with ice skating and spent countless hours creating magical patterns on the ice. Now as a visual artist she paints intricate patterns reconnecting with that sense of magic and wonder. Driven by compassion, she pursued a career as a Trauma Operating Room Nurse, plastics, reconstructive and craniofacial specialist, where she witnessed the resilience of human spirit firsthand. Painting became a bridge that allowed her to express her creativity and bring healing to those who have experienced trauma including herself.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: My “Why” is clear. I want to share the meditative and transformative powers of art universally. My art is a vessel for healing, a source of inspiration, and a reminder that beauty can emerge from even the most challenging circumstances. I create, explore, and touch lives through my art. With every brushstroke, I invite others to embark on their own transformative journey, reminding them that art has the power to heal, transform, and ignite the spark of hope within their souls. My paintings are a reflection of my journey- the resilience and perseverance to stand in the face of adversity, abstracting the beauty I discover in unexpected places, and the depth of my emotions. These paintings tell the story of love, loss, and the indomitable spirit that resides in all of us. Each piece is a testament to the power of following one’s passion, even when life takes unexpected turns. But the journey doesn’t stop there. I realize my art has the potential to touch lives and make a difference. With a compassionate heart, I use my skills to help others to heal and transform. I offer breast cancer survivors and people living with all types of scars a unique form of support. I create intricate camouflage and 3-D tattoos specifically designed to help reclaim their bodies and embrace their scars as symbols of strength and resilience. Through my art these individuals are empowered to embrace new beginnings in their journey of healing.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: Rembrandt, Rubens, Johnathan Lasker, Joan Mitchell, Gerhard Richter, Chagall, Kandinsky, Pollock, Susan Caporael, and more.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Imagination is the language of the soul. Pay attention to your imagination and you will discover all you need to be fulfilled.” -Albert Einstein

Q: What does exhibiting at Spectrum Miami 2023 mean to you?

A: I’m looking forward to this opportunity to share my work on a large scale in one of the most exciting shows of the year! This means connecting with people who are seeking to collect original art where the experience, the story, and vision inspire them. Meeting buyers, collectors, other artists, and aspiring artists will give rise to future collaborations.

From the vibrant streets of Sao Paulo to workshops in NYC, Florida, Brazil, and California, Silvaberg’s camera has been an extension of her soul. With an innate ability to capture the essence of any subject that began early in life, she has nurtured her skill both formally and through self-exploration.

Guided by a deep spiritual connection to humans, animals, and nature, Silvaberg always aims to photograph the ubiquitous beauty around us. Her mission is to use art photography as a bridge, fostering empowerment, unity, and inspiration beyond boundaries of race, gender, and orientation. Through the lens, she immortalizes moments and emotions, drawing the viewer into the artwork’s holistic embrace.

Carol Hartman – Booth 230

Hartman, an American artist renowned for her textured large-scale paintings, masterfully blends layers of paint to oscillate between concealment and revelation. Each large-scale painting (some interactive) is a physical record of a specific experience identified in life. The paintings are begun very loosely as they relate to a particular experience — but they begin to speak, and Hartman reveals their message in the final layering.

Born in Montana and deeply rooted in the arts, she spent over two decades showcasing electronic installations about biases from California to New York. Since 2009, her oil paintings exploring human experiences have graced galleries in the U.S. and Europe.

Edna Oar Young, a renowned dimensional metal sculpture artist, draws her inspiration from a vibrant palette of colors and a diverse array of art mediums. Her distinctive creations have graced national publications like House Beautiful, Elle Décor, and Illustrator Home Decorating. Additionally, prestigious institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution, Museum of American Folk Art, and the Baseball Hall of Fame have sought her expertise for commissioned works. Among her accolades, she takes pride in the Editor’s Choice Award from Colonial Home Magazine.

Edna’s roots trace back to rural Western New York, where she was engrossed in a world of unique antiques, courtesy of her parents, who were dedicated antique dealers. This early immersion in timeless artistry has left an indelible mark on her creations. As she looks ahead, Edna remains fervently dedicated to crafting exquisite dimensional works, continually taking cues from nature’s mesmerizing hues.

Henry Blond, a master of expressive portraiture, stands out in the contemporary art scene for his distinctive approach to oil painting. He weaves a narrative with each stroke, opting for a carefully curated limited palette. His broad and dynamic brushstrokes are a testament to his commitment to the medium, ensuring every piece is imbued with energy and movement.

Blond’s work operates in a space of tension and harmony between the fully realized and the merely suggested. This balance establishes an engrossing dialogue within each painting, a conversation that resonates with intensity and extends beyond the canvas’s confines. Drawing inspiration from life, memories, and human connections, Blond captures the raw honesty of the human condition. He delves deep, exploring the myriad emotions, vulnerabilities, strengths, and intricacies that make up the human experience. He invites viewers to not just see but feel and connect with the stories painted on his canvas.

Julia C R Gray, is a native California artist who sculpts ceramic torsos with rich layers of form, texture and painted narrative imagery. Her artwork portrays multilayered messages, starting with vulnerability of the oceans and our bodies, balanced with the dialectic message of the power of the oceans and the strength of women’s bodies. Gray’s artwork also comments on contemporary life, personal experience and consciousness of nature.

Gray’s ceramic torsos are individualized through hand-painted glaze images and surface texture of layered ceramic slip. Her sculpture series SHE-Sea Wisdom features ceramic female torsos attached to bases of coral-inspired clay shapes. The body’s opalescent form speaks to the mystery of being, and deeply embedded coral patterns with real gold accents symbolizes nature’s preciousness. After texturing the outer surface, Gray carves holes into the clay to give the viewer superficial visual access within the body structure where red glaze is painted. The final gold and luster glazes add an understanding that this subject is treasured.

As Artexpo New York presents its 46th edition at Pier 36 in Manhattan’s trending Lower East Side, a new addition has been made to the acclaimed fair programming: The Visionaries. Each Visionary is selected by Artexpo’s curatorial team based on three factors:

Unswerving representation of artist innovators, consistently bringing forward-thinking cutting-edge art to the fair

Articulate and distinctive presentation of each artist’s work, exceeding all display guidelines

Consistent exhibition at the fair over a period of three or more years

From the amazing list of exhibitors, Artexpo’s curators present the inaugural group of Visionaries — an acclaimed group of exhibitors giving Artexpo attendees a first-hand opportunity to see and collect incredible original art.

This year’s Artexpo New York takes place March 30-April 2, 2023, at Manhattan’s newest destination for art, Pier 36. Each year, the fair’s special programs range from immersive artist-led Art Lab experiences to compelling Art Talks and exciting Meet the Artist sessions.

Jael Roznicki is an Alberta, Canada, abstract artist, currently residing in Edmonton. She primarily works in oil paint on canvas as her medium. Having experimented with acrylics, she landed on the texture and pliability of oil paint, mostly using palette knives and brushes and sometimes fingers, to achieve a variety of final effects and textures. Having a long history in creative expression, she was formally trained as a graphic designer, which enables her to envision in things spatially and in proportion. Using color theory and play on shapes and textures to evoke an emotion or to express an emotion is a key component of Roznicki’s work.

Q: Introduce yourself — who you are and what your gallery’s vision is?

A: Founded in 2018 as an e-commerce gallery, Artios showcases a number of emerging and established international artists selected for their unique creative and intellectual vision. The gallery aims to connect beautiful works of art with enthusiastic new owners and provide a platform for emerging artists of all styles and genres. We are working towards achieving this by creating online and physical exhibitions, printing art catalogs and advising our artists on various marketing strategies.

Q: What is your background?

A: Founders Elena Iosilvich and Ellen Opman bring their rich backgrounds to the development and business of establishing Artios Gallery, providing expertise to both the artists they represent and the collectors they serve. Elena Iosilevich (Seroff) is a New York-based artist and entrepreneur. She is the Founder and Art Director of Artios Gallery. Elena studied fashion design at LEX University in Tallinn and received a BA in Decorative art from Kaliningrad Art and Industrial College. Elena is an active member of many reputable art organizations, such as the National Association of Women Artists and the Association of Women Art Dealers. Elena has been living and working in NYC since 1996. Originally from Ukraine, Ellen Opman immigrated to the US over 30 years ago. Ellen holds a business degree from the City University of New York. Before co-founding Artios Gallery, she worked in several international firms in New York and London, UK. Currently, Ellen is combining her business commitments with pursuing a Master’s degree in the Museum Studies field.

Q: What is your work philosophy, and how does that impact the gallery?

A: Artios aims to be an inclusive and diverse place. Our philosophy is to provide our clients with various styles and genres suited to various tastes and needs. We constantly search for new talent, be it a local artist or someone who lives abroad. In today’s increasingly interconnected world, an online representation allows us to reach more people worldwide. As part of our strategy, we partner with art-selling global platforms. This partnership is essential for helping to expand our business and giving us a perspective on contemporary art trends and interests.

Q: What artists and art styles do you represent?

A: Artios Gallery prides itself on selecting high-quality, exceptionally talented artists whose unique vision shapes the contemporary art scene. Our artists work in many styles and media, including abstract and figurative oil and acrylic paintings, prints, photographs, and digital art. They come from sixteen countries across South and North America, Europe, and the Middle East. The variety of styles our gallery represents is a testament to cultural diversity, the richness of imagination, and the versatility of methods used to create art.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: The most important thing is humor. Everything else is nonsense. Here is a famous quote by Walt Whitman: “Keep your face always toward the sunshine, and shadows will fall behind you.”

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

A: Being at work is a constant process of our weekday schedule. However, when we are not working, you can find us touring the galleries of The MET or attending the numerous exhibitions and art fairs NYC offers.

For Miami Art Week 2022, Spectrum Miami and Red Dot Miami will be opening their doors on Wednesday, November 30, running through Sunday, December 4, 2022.
The two fairs form the acclaimed contemporary and fine art experience that collectively presents some of today’s most coveted national and international galleries and artists from the U.S. and around the world. Redwood Art Group exclusively produces the two art shows housed in one location—considered to be the only multi-show production of its kind during Miami Art Week.

With a full slate of special programs including Art Labs, the Spotlight Program, Meet the Artists with Live Demonstrations, and the Discoveries Collection, it’s the ultimate destination for the fine art industry professional and contemporary art enthusiast who seek a more accessible experience with exhibits showcasing the world’s most progressive portfolios by some of today’s elite artists, galleries, dealers, and emerging talents.

The Spotlight Program is a focused look at a curated group of exhibitors that represent cutting-edge creativity and a distinctive approach to their art and the art world. Here’s an overview of this year’s Spotlight Program recipients!

SPECTRUM MIAMI 2022 SPOTLIGHT RECIPIENTS

Briana Fitzpatrick (Booth 1506)

Briana Fitzpatrick is a multidisciplinary artist who loves to dance, flip, contort, and paint all at the same time. It sounds wild and you can imagine a studio filled with paint splattered floors and walls. Fitzpatrick might be painting while hanging upside down spinning from the ceiling, engaging in a creative outburst, and feeling alive and present in the moment. She hopes her deep desire to capture the dynamic beauty of energy and movement in her art allows the viewer to be inspired, express who they are, and follow their dreams. Fitzpatrick says, “When we do and express what we love most, we not only shine brighter, but so does our world.”

Brinton Farrand (Booth 1203)

Brinton Farrand is an experimentalist, heavily influenced by Salvador Dali, tattoo artists, and street artists around the world. He doesn’t follow the crowd. By observing society and life around him, Farrand uses his art to tell a story of what he sees and feels, challenging the status quo in both the depiction of ideas and the techniques used to capture it. He believes that the foundation of artwork should include strong lines, vibrant colors, and the power of light and reflection.

Deadwax – Alex Grimmer (Booth 1610)

Deadwax is the area on vinyl records between the last track on the record and the label that does not get used. Deadwax art was started by Alex Grimmer, an artist out of Los Angeles. Grimmer started selling art on the famous Venice Beach, then travelled the U.S. selling artwork at music and art festivals. The goal of his art is to portray how music can make you feel, the emotions or memories that come from listening to a certain artist or song. Grimmer believes the best part of his work is hearing how it stimulates memories while experiencing the artwork.

Jordana Rae Gassner (Booth 1417)

Jordana Rae Gassner is primarily an oil painter with a focus on metaphysical realism. Growing up in the Black Hills of Sougth Dakota gave her a love of nature and an appreciation of the freedom to explore. Today, Gassner resides in Germany and spends much of her time exploring and experimenting with ideas of science and spirituality on her canvases. Through her work, she endeavors to connect, comfort, and question using a visual and abstract approach that, “circumvents an automated response of rejection.”

Juan Pablo Zapata (Booth 1606)

Juan Pablo Zapata works with a fluid, instinctive approach of emotions through movement, color, and form. With the intention to connect people with their own self, their beauty and their emotions — emotions of excitement, curiosity, aliveness, and ease — Zapata intends to bring a fresh perspective into the art world, with creation that goes beyond the established art of the moment. He explains, ”I want it to be of value to others. I want to bring new perspectives of reality and follow my own instincts in the creative process. I want to be loyal to my inner creativity and let it flow freely.”

Scott Jeffries (Booth 1602)

Scott Jeffries is a painter and sculptor whose work is vibrant and joyful, filled with color and energy. Jeffries explains that his work is an irreverent expression of his subconscious, an invitation to his brain. His vivid imagination was manifested through doodles as a child and has evolved over the years to the work he is doing today. The intention is for his work to be a mirror of the person creating it and provides a reflection of his mood, introspection, and thoughts.

Jen Tough Gallery (Booth 418)

Jen Tough Gallery began in the Bay Area of California in February 2017. A move to Santa Fe, New Mexico, a month before the Covid shutdown meant the gallery was never able to re-open. Fast forward two years and the Jen Tough Gallery is expected to open in its new Santa Fe home in Spring 2023. The Jen Tough Gallery will incorporate a new artist-focused business called AIR Studios (“AIR” stands for Artists in Residence) which are artist studio rentals by the week, with open studios each weekend. Tough was inspired by the origins of Canyon Road (the famous art gallery area of Santa Fe), which was created by dozens of artists opening their studios to the public. She believes that the future of art selling is changing to a more artist-centered model, and AIR Studios intend to help facilitate that model, where artists can meet and sell directly to the public. The gallery’s exhibit at Red Dot will showcase a wide variety of art and artists, from abstract expressionist Sarah Boyts Yoder to photo collage work by Liz Steketee, to quirky drawings by Laura Klopfenstein.

Natalia Fedner Studio (Booth 318)

Natalia Fedner is an Art to Wear couture designer and artist based in Los Angeles. She was born in Ukraine and immigrated to Columbus, Ohio as a child. Her interest in designing and inventing started at the early age of 4 when she began collecting “pretty colored wires” that were left as trash outside of a local telephone communications company in her native Chernivtsi, Ukraine. (She would turn them into bracelets for herself and friends). She moved to New York and later Paris to attend Parsons School of Design and study the techniques of haute couture. Fedner is most well-known for creating avant garde designs and jewelry for celebrities including Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Cher, Doja Cat, Janet Jackson, Charlize Theron, Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz, Cardi B, Kourtney Kardashian, Kristen Stewart, Sharon Stone, and others. Her designs have been on runways in Paris and New York and featured in the prestigious New York windows of Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. At Red Dot Miami 2022, Fedner is launching her first fine art offering, incorporating her patented textile into sculptures.

Tribes Art Africa Gallery (TAAG) was founded in 2001 by Rodney Asikhia and is now recognized as the Rodney Asikhia Gallery. The gallery is driven by a passion for beauty and quality in art. This quality is reflected in the works selected and in their handling and presentation. As its name indicates, one of its driving philosophies and missions is the promotion of art from Africa and the African diaspora. To this end, it has represented well over a hundred African artists in the 20 years since its founding. Rodney Asikhia, the gallery founder, believes that African artists and all other artists of color have important stories to tell and unique viewpoints to share.

In addition to this, the work of the gallery is aimed at addressing and correcting the racial bias that leaves black artists and black art underrepresented in many art institutions around the world. It also emphasizes the importance of visual arts to communities by organizing public programs, lectures, symposia, forums, and the like. All of these also ensure that the promotion and sale of artworks are met with critical engagement and appreciation. TAAG Gallery specializes in artist management, art collections, art management, art sale, art leasing, industry reports, auctions, and art commissions.

Featured Artists

At their booth at the Artexpo Dallas 2022, TAAG will be showing the works of 6 artists: Daniel Gyekyi Gyan, Sisqo Ndombe, Madoti Oluwadamilare, Bara Sketchbook, Kelani Fatai, and Wilson Imini. Several of the works being exhibited are figurative and portrait paintings featuring black subjects. The paintings, in style, composition and theme, explore personhood, identity, urbanity, strength, human beauty, personal history and individual agency.

Daniel Gyekyi Gyan

Daniel Gyekyi Gyan is a Ghanaian artist currently living and working in Accra, Ghana. Gyan studied at Accra’s Ghanatta College of Art and Design. He graduated in 2008 and took to painting in earnest. The sources of his inspiration derive from his immediate neighbourhood, the internet, fashion, models and urban culture. His canvases bear all these influences, as he strives to bring into every piece as much of his world as he can.

Madoti Oluwadamilare

Madoti Oluwadamilare is a contemporary artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. He taught himself and mastered his art through practice and consistency. Inspired by his environment, his paintings capture the struggle of individuals who try to be upright amidst the harsh reality surrounding them. His paintings are bright-colored and show figures with flower or lightbulb heads. His clean lines, great facility with color, and carefully selected contemporary backgrounds express a range of moods: self-assured, thoughtful, calm, flummoxed, and cheerful.

Sisqo Ndombe

Sisquo Ndombe, Manuela, 2022, Acrylic on canvas, 128 × 98 cm.
Sisqo Ndombe is a Congolese artist who makes figurative paintings with magical realist or surrealist elements. His work makes use of bright colors and shows subjects with ecstatic gazes. This may be read as a celebration of self and of identity. His paintings with their pairings of dual figures, with their holding of cockerels and flowers, speak to inheritance, beauty, complexity, and African spirituality.

Kelani Fatai

Kelani Fatai is a young Nigerian artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. He studied painting and design at the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos. His works are figurative paintings with a strong focus on portraits of women dressed in fashionable clothes. Very notably, the backgrounds in his paintings are covered in flowers. The realism and strongly aesthetic quality of his paintings, done in a style reminiscent of Kehinde Wiley, give them their great appeal.

Bara Sketchbook is a painter whose works are done in strong and vivid neon colours. The subjects of his painting are often presented in intimate poses, and from how much character he infuses through the use of colours and intense gazes, one can surmise that they have strong, complex personalities. He, very pointedly, is a painter of illustrious figures.

Wilson Imini is a young painter based in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. His interests and œuvre are focused on figurative paintings of famous figures in which he blends life portraiture with imagination. The paintings are done in bright—or more appropriately, bold colours. There are large swathes of sky and grass and intense young faces tinged red. The figures in the paintings are self-assured and powerful, occupying a central world in which all forces and influences seem to belong to and revolve around them.

Rodney Asikhia will be exhibiting at Booth 114 at Artexpo Dallas from September 16 – 18, 2022.
