Recycling Plastic One Painting At A Time

Linda Mariano, Editor-in-Chief

Artist Pedjman Mohammadi’s collection is a breathtaking fusion of creativity and sustainability, transforming plastic waste into stunning abstract art. Each piece is meticulously crafted from recycled materials, merging eco-consciousness with aesthetic brilliance.

Pedjman’s artistic vision breathes new life into discarded plastics, turning them into unique, visually captivating artworks. His artwork offers a diverse array of colors, textures, and styles, ensuring there’s something to inspire every art enthusiast.

Art Business News recently met with Pedjman to learn more about his career and his amazing works of art.

ABN: Let’s start at the beginning — tell us a little bit about how and when you decided to make art your career.

Pedjman: I’ve been painting since 1995, but I started painting full-time just last September. Being a father of an 11-year-old, the future of the next generation is very important to me. My daughter is a very focused environmental individual: she gathers plastic and tries to recycle just about anything. So this last September, I decided to team up with her and try to work as much as I can with recycled materials to create my art. And that’s how everything started. Then I connected with Redwood and Artexpo New York to create my first exhibition in April, and the rest, as they say, is history.

ABN: One of the most intriguing parts about your work is that you’re not just using environmentally correct products to create the work, but you’re recycling things and incorporating them into each mixed media piece of artwork — and in some very interesting and compelling ways. When it gets down to the day-to-day of creating, what is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work on a daily basis?

Pedjman: Let’s see. Part of my timeline was living in Japan, part was living in Vienna. Living in those two countries informed me how to pay close attention to nature, recognize art, and pay attention to the environment around me. And that is essentially who I was and who I am. Those two experiences in my earlier life are still a big influence on me today. And then, the rest is really trying to be an environmentally conscious individual. I try to recycle as much as I can. I do believe there is a bridge between creativity and sustainability, and I can form plastic and create art and deliver that to my audience.

Pedjman Mohammadi at Artexpo New York

ABN: And the pieces you create are definitely show stoppers, not only from a size perspective, but they are dramatic and compelling. Let’s switch topics just a bit and ask you to think about people that you’ve talked to, people that you know, or people that you’ve read about. What’s the best advice that you’ve ever gotten, and how has that impacted your success?

Pedjman: Best advice I received was really from Redwood Art Group. I decided it was important for me to come to an art fair and present myself. I wasn’t expecting anything out of that experience. I just wanted to know where I stood i respect to today’s art business and art culture. Really listening to the advice I got, everything that Eric told me about price point and how to deliver myself to the visitors at the fair really helped me. Listening about marketing piece and how to put my booth together and curate my artwork to make the best impression really helped me to showcase and position each piece for the audience. I would say the best advice I received was really from Redwood.

ABN: Well, thank you. Wow! I wasn’t expecting that. So what do you do to market yourself and your art?

Pedjman: I leverage Instagram daily. I share my work and my daily work process on Instagram. I try to get out there as much I can, join art events as much as I can, and go to art galleries as much as I can. I think seeing art and speaking to people helps to create connections and relationships.

ABN: Making connections is so important. Whether it’s being at art events, whatever they are, really being present and working it. When it’s a first time, like one of Redwood’s fairs or even getting your work in a gallery, it’s important to remember it’s also the first time the work is being seen by that audience. So you might not sell anything, but it’s the networking and creating connections that can lead to amazing outcomes. Those connections build one on the other — and that’s how you start to establish yourself with a base and as a career artist.

Thinking about that, what has been your greatest success in terms of building your career and your client base?

Pedjman: That’s sort of a challenging question because I’ve really only been in this full time for less than a year. My greatest success really started at Artexpo New York. Like I said, I didn’t have any expectations, just wanted to see where I stood. It was remembering the small things, like “Hey, stand up in front of your booth.” It was one of the things that really captured everybody’s attention and drew them toward me, and I was able to talk to every single person. There were so many conversations that opened doors in all different aspects. In the fair, I was able to sell three of my pieces out of ten that I presented.

But then so much came after based on all of the connections that I gathered — I got commissions after commissions, two weeks, four weeks after. And it was a joy for me to be able to listen and execute on everything Redwood had advised me. And it worked. Even my Instagram account, I started with 250 or so followers when I was in Artexpo New York. today I have nearly 4,000!

All of these small things might be small, but it was a big, big victory for me as a beginner. And all of those are the things that really work. And I try to stick to those things, over and over.

ABN: What you’re really talking about is building blocks. It’s building a foundation, no matter what you’re building — you’re building a house, you’re building a career, you have to have the foundation, then you can stand on that foundation and it’s solid ground.

Just one more question. Any particular advice as an emerging artist that you would give an aspiring artist?

Pedjman: Well, I would say be honest with yourself and be consistent. Do what you’re doing day after day. Get out there, and build relationships. I think that’s the most important piece of the puzzle. And not only that, maintaining that relationship is very important. This means that whether you gather a phone number or an email address, reach out to those clients and individuals when you have events coming up. Enjoy the ride. Try not to stress and enjoy the experience, set the tone and set the mood. I think everything starts with the attitude — when the attitude is right and the attitude is out there it creates a positive vibe that captures attention. I think that’s very important. And I’ve experienced it first hand. So that would be my two cents.

ABN: You are so right! I think one of the things that has attracted your success is that if you are enjoying what you’re doing and you have a positive attitude. Sure, it can be scary. It’s your career, it’s your livelihood. It’s always going to be challenging. But I think you’re meeting the challenge. And congratulations.

And, Pedjman, if you don’t mind, we’ll love to check back with you in a year or so and see what’s happened then.

Pedjman: Absolutely, that would be great! Thank you so much!

A: We are pleased to introduce James Bacchi Contemporary. Celebrating forty years in the art business in New York, San Francisco and most recently Palm Springs. More than a gallery owner, James Bacchi is a curator, art consultant and collaborator. His notoriety in the art world and his continued success stems from his ability to fearlessly reinvent himself.

James’s vision for his latest gallery and for his outstanding roster of artists is to provide an inspired, intimate exhibition space and art consultancy where he can introduce these artists and their work to the worldwide audience of contemporary art collectors, architects and designers that converge at The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five in Palm Springs, California.

A: My background incorporates many facets of the Art Business including public relations, curating exhibitions, owning galleries and corporate art consulting. Having the opportunity to delve into all these arenas has served me well Inside James Bacchi Contemporary.

A: “My work philosophy evolves around my solid relationships with the artists and collectors I work with, my art selection process, my integrity and the pure enjoyment derived from what I do. I love the art business,” says Bacchi. “Every work of art I represent, and exhibit is one I would want to include in my personal collection. I believe my passion for the work has the greatest impact on the success of James Bacchi Contemporary.”

Q: What is your vision for the next year? Next 5 years?

A: At 69 years young, my vision today focuses far more on the present and immediate future, unlike in the early stages of my career where I felt the importance of long-term goals and five-year plans. These days, I’m all about being fully committed with no commitment. Strange as it sounds, it offers tremendous freedom, satisfies my desire for short term results, and leaves me open to all the possibilities.

For example, finally, after all these years in the business I recently enjoyed my first sold out exhibition with master printmaker, Eric Rewitzer. The show, MCM Monsters, not only sold out but presented me the opportunity to orchestrate five commissions with the artist for collectors. The exhibition generated tremendous media attention including NBC-TV. From planning the exhibition to delivering the last commissioned work took all of six months.

Next year will feature a sequel to MCM Monsters opening in February 2025 in conjunction with Modernism Week in Palm Springs. Until then, I am curating Group Exhibitions and Pop Ups, spotlighting works by JBC represented artists. This allows me creativity and the opportunity to constantly rotate inventory and most importantly, place the work.

Collaborators James Bacchi and Susaye Greene discussing their latest project, Meta Contemporary, over lunch at the Casa Del Mar Hotel in Santa Monica, CA. My vision also includes more collaborations. I am currently collaborating with artist, singer, songwriter, Susaye Greene, aka The Last Supreme, on Meta Contemporary. This gallery/auction platform, located in the Metaverse, will feature events and exhibitions with an auction component designed to benefit various arts related organizations. We are beyond excited by this project. Please stay tuned.

A: In addition to the artists I represent, I do have a bucket list of artists that inspire me. Presently, they include Timothy Cummings, Donld Roller Wilson, Simen Yohan, Banksy, Yoshitomo Nara, and Anthony James. I recently caught David Hockney’s Drawing From Life exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
A: The best advice I received came from a colleague, art collector, and dear friend. Years ago, I recall discussing some aspects of my business I wasn’t pleased with. Her response, “If it’s not working, change it!” That advise has very much become my life mantra. Thank you, Paula Davidsen.

Having worked as an architect for forty years, Bill says he has contributed to the transformation of the New Mexico landscape. His sharp sense of composition, structure, and balance from working in architecture gives a definite perspective to his art. Simple geometry and powerful form with an emphasis on the significance of the relationship between interior (positive) and exterior (negative) space define his design approach. Bill says he picked up the ability to think and see globally. His abstract paintings arouse feelings of solidity, substance, and emotion. The spectacular visual contrasts of the high desert Southwest serve as his inspiration.

Vivienne Riggio has a comprehensive portfolio that documents her artistic journey and accomplishments. The most recent works are large scale mythical creatures that connect us to another time, another place, each emphasizes the intricate details and vibrant colors that define her style. Drawing on her experience in operatic costume design, she creates shaman-like sculptures that evoke a departure from conventional imagery to an unfamiliar place of wonder. Each piece created by Vivienne is accompanied by insightful descriptions and contextual background, allowing a better understanding of her inspiration and creative processes. These pieces transcend the cultures we think of as the norm, the ordinary, the customary, and take our imaginations to a place of our own invention.

Art Business News loves connecting with creators and collaborators, especially when it results in something unique. We recently interviewed Daniel Duarte, Creative Director for Street League Skateboarding about their collaboration with artist Madsteez for both their events and products. Check out the interview below — and some great photos from one of their events!

ABN: Daniel, please Introduce yourself — who you are and what was your vision for this collaboration and collection?

Daniel Duarte The collaboration with Madsteez originates from the concept of integrating artists into the creative process alongside SLS. We aim to partner with local artists in the various regions we’re touring this year. Madsteez’s upbringing in Southern California provides a critical thread evident throughout his art, making him an ideal partner for our San Diego event. Art holds significant importance in skateboarding culture; from the graphics on skateboards, to the clothing and shoes skateboarders wear to even the act of skateboarding itself. It all develops as forms of artistic expression.

ABN: What is your background?

DD: At 14, I discovered my love for creating skate videos with friends, finding as much joy behind the camera as on the board. Over the past 15 years, I’ve immersed myself in the skateboarding scene, merging my two passions of skateboarding and filmmaking. Throughout those years, I worked alongside many talented individuals—including shoe designers, graphic designers, and photographers. This creative community has been incredibly inspiring and opened my eyes to the many artists that are connected through skateboarding. When considering a collaboration or partnership, I instinctively search my network, seeking the right artists or creators who have a connection to skateboarding to bring my vision to life.

ABN: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

DD: Authenticity is at the heart of our work at SLS and we must fully immerse ourselves in skateboarding and its culture to deliver on that premise. Our job is showcasing the best skateboarding to our audience so when we look to broaden skateboarding’s reach, authenticity drives our decisions. This ensures alignment with our core values. When selecting artists to collaborate with, authenticity is key. We assess how these artists have stayed true to their core values while carving out their paths.

ABN: What artist(s) inspire you?

DD: I’ve always been inspired by my peers in the skateboarding community. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with many creative individuals, some of whom have gone on to achieve great success beyond skateboarding. For example, Spike Jonze started with skateboard films and eventually built a remarkable career directing major Hollywood movies.

ABN: What is the best advice you’ve received?

DD: KEEP IT SIMPLE.

ABN: When you are not working, where can we find you?

DD: I try to spend most of my time outdoors away from computer screens. Any great idea I’ve ever had happens anywhere but behind a desk. Go outside.

ABN: What does Street League Skateboarding’s collaboration program mean to you?

DD: Collaborating with an artist like MADSTEEZ brings a fresh perspective and an artistic look to SLS while showcasing creativity to our audience. This partnership reinforces our commitment to authenticity and innovation, aligning with our mission to celebrate skateboarding culture in all forms.

THE LEGENDS

Acknowledging the amazing art history of Artexpo New York, Redwood Art Group wishes to commemorate five special exhibitors who have made Artexpo New York a not-to-be-missed event. Each Legend was selected by Artexpo’s curatorial team based on three factors:

For 10 years or more, the Legend has consistently exhibited at Artexpo New York with Redwood Art Group

Demonstrated unswerving representation of artist innovators, consistently bringing forward-thinking cutting-edge art to the fair

Articulate and distinctive presentation of each artist’s work, exceeding all display guidelines

Come to Artexpo New York April 4-7, 2024, at Manhattan’s newest destination for art, Pier 36. Check out the 2024 Artexpo New York Legends. Don’t miss their exceptional exhibits and artists!

World Wide Art began in 2006 with a simple approach of printing an art book presenting the work of noteworthy artists from all over the world. Noteworthy meaning original, with an element of inspiration, vision, originality; plus mastery in the artist’s given medium. Artavita is the online forum for these same artists to be seen and collected. With art that is continually new and fresh from both emerging and established artists, the Artavita World Wide Art curated exhibitions are a must-see at international art fairs.

Samir Sammoun celebrates his 29th year exhibiting at Artexpo — it’s where he launched his signature impressionistic style in 1996 and where his collectors and galleries still come to buy his latest masterpieces. A great colorist by nature, Sammoun possesses a rich palette that features more than 30 shades and tones, providing the necessary foundation for his soft point and long-handled brushwork. A landscape artist, Samir Sammoun has a vast repertoire of pictorial themes: willows, apple trees in bloom, wheat fields, olive trees, villages, storms, cityscapes and seascapes. His paintings reflect a tranquil happy mood.

After settling in California, Boyadjiev worked for more than ten years in the field of optical glass, using cold work techniques such as cutting, grinding, polishing and laminating to create optical glass sculptures that were his first collections. Since there were limits to the size of his objects, he changed his glass technique from optical to cast glass.

His new and exciting work was introduced at SOFA 1997 in Chicago and the response was very enthusiastic – dynamic sculptures reflecting depth and dimension, a new approach to contemporary glass art and design. He is excited to bring his innovative works to Red Dot Miami for the very first time.

The Human Condition: An Artistic Exploration by Ashley Joan

Drawing from the intriguing question of what it would look like if our emotions were made visible, Ashley Joan crafts art that delves into the intricate relationship between emotional and physical experiences. Utilizing a layered approach, her paintings meld evocative imagery with compelling human portraits, aiming to ignite conversations about external appearances and internal emotional complexities.

Her choice of subject matter varies, often reflecting her emotional state during the early conceptual stages of her work. Sometimes, she explores the microcosm of human cellular structure to evoke emotional responses. At other times, she incorporates elements like seascapes to demonstrate how our environment influences our mental state. Given the ever-changing nature of human emotions, Ashley finds herself with an endless reservoir of inspiration for her art.

Artistic Alchemy: Melding Texture, Color, and Emotion

Born into a Colombian family where traditional professions reigned, she initially followed a path into engineering and finance before relocating to Canada and answering the innate irresistible drive to create art.

Abandoning a successful finance career, Carolina embraced her true calling—painting a unique reality through a multidisciplinary approach. Her artwork – whether in the form of paintings or photographs – serves as an emotional and social commentary, incorporating a medley of characters and influences that have touched her life. She experimented with a range of materials and textures, from paint and wax to collage, driven by a dedication to explore and portray the complexities of human experience.

Represented by ACT Contemporary

Born in Izmir to architect parents, Dilek Uzunoglu Ors’s interest in painting began at a young age. After her undergraduate studies in economics and a postgraduate degree in business administration, she worked in managerial positions in various multinational companies.

Ors had the opportunity to continue her interest in painting during the pandemic and developed a passion for abstract expressionism which led her to further develop her talent as an abstract painter. She is known for her bold use of color and complex layering. Her abstract style allows the viewer to have a visual experience that evokes feelings of well-being, joy of life, and dreaming.

Ors explains her inspiration and process: “I take my inspiration from nature, music, cinema, literature, and stories of everyday people. I am trying to interpret the world the way I see it, and I am in a continuous search for freedom and balance. I love to work with different materials and tools including those recycled, use uncommon color matches, and create texture. I am in search of more dynamics and light in painting and experimenting with different materials and techniques. In my working process, I am following the unconscious. The colors are used autonomously and give the drive for the creation. I am working with multilayers and with recycled paints and found objects, which are integrated into the canvas to create depth and texture.”

Ors’ goal is to create a personal work containing variations that never end, always trying to continue the process of creating and sharing. Art becomes a journey for the artist to seek meaning and self-fulfillment. Her paintings consist of layers and thickness, some with more transparent colors and spontaneous brush movements. Through her art, she hopes to spread her energy and joy of life with other people.

Influenced by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Damian Hirst, she revels in their experimentation with various methods and mediums, and how they were able to create works that were unlike anything that had been seen before. Ors aspires to do the same with her use of color and layering techniques.

Güneş Çağlarcan, a multidisciplinary painter and pianist from Istanbul, Turkey, explores the relationship between perception and human relations in his art. His main areas of interest are the human mind, human relations and inner reflection. He focuses on the effect of both the mind and the heart on human perception as relational.

Çağlarcan’s work explores psycho-visuals and manipulation of human perception to look for any relationship between objects and past experiences. He uses perception as an element of composition, the ultimate decoder that effortlessly challenges the brain to identify objects. As a pmusician as well as a painter, Caglarcan finds the relationship between music and visuals and adopts these materials as a formal structure. He collaborates with composers and performers in his exhibitions and installations.

As the artist describes, “My artwork delves into the unexplored world of hidden emotional situations that influence human behavior. Through my art, I aim to provoke individuals to explore more profoundly and confront their inner selves and the deeper emotions that shape our daily attitudes and lives, often aspects we tend to avoid.”

At Red Dot Miami 2023, Çağlarcan will be showcasing his Shadows Collection. In this collection, he undertakes the impact of global upheavals, thrusting health, peace, and happiness into the limelight while unearthing sorrows and fears that we either dismissed or concealed. The work presents an opportunity to engage the viewer on a deeper emotional level which for Çağlarcan became an amazing construct to spread art, love and friendship.
