The large-scale sculptures I create embody a dichotomy: the aspects of myself unveiled to the world and those concealed within. Through these works, I invite viewers to delve into their shadow selves, dissecting personal experiences and emotions to uncover their own meanings within the forms.

My work as a sculptor revolves around this exploration of duality, demanding a level of physical engagement that is both exhausting and exhilarating.

I am in perpetual metamorphosis, constantly deconstructing and reconstructing, transforming trauma and captivity into physical forms that embody an incarnation of freedom.

Every piece I create is a reflection of my life, both literally and figuratively. Wielding chainsaws, chisels, sledgehammers, and sanders, I tell my story—a visceral form of communication. It is a journey of discovery where each cut and strike reveals something new and unexpected, subliminally guiding the physical process of creation through destruction.

This intense physicality channels a powerful, primal expression of energy and intent that I’ve only recently felt free to unleash.

I have found that my purpose is to use art to amplify my voice and my goal is to dismantle societal barriers. Continuously learning, I embrace the judgments that come with presenting my diverse and authentic self. By passionately engaging in various forms of self-expression, I aim to challenge the traditional narratives that confine women to singular roles.

“Veil” by Constantin Ford

I’ve never understood why people can’t grasp that someone feminine can also be fiercely powerful. Society often perpetuates a narrow definition of strength, associating it with traditionally masculine traits and overlooking the profound power inherent in femininity. This misconception diminishes the complexity and depth of feminine strength, which can manifest in countless ways—from nurturing and compassion to resilience and fierce determination. By embracing a more inclusive understanding of power, we can recognize and celebrate the dynamic capabilities of those who embody both femininity and strength. This duality should be seen as a source of empowerment rather than a contradiction. It is essential to challenge and change these outdated perceptions, fostering a culture that values and respects the diverse expressions of power in all individuals.

Through my work, I strive to create a platform that encourages people to explore and celebrate their multifaceted identities without fear of criticism or limitation. This involves not only creating art that speaks to these themes but also participating in discussions, collaborations, and community initiatives that support and uplift women’s diverse contributions. My goal is to inspire a cultural shift where women’s diverse talents and ambitions are recognized, respected, and celebrated, propelling the conversation forward towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

Leading with this theme, I named my first series of sculptures “Emergence,” depicting the body’s ascension from the depths of traumas dark waters, highlighting curves as they rise towards the light of freedom. To carve these models, I used raw, industrial materials typically seen as harsh and inflexible. I manipulated these to create feminine, refined forms. This juxtaposition challenges the traditional use of art mediums, particularly when modeling for large-scale sculptures, where softer, more conventional substances are often preferred. The result is a body of work that represents the tension between strength and fragility, exposure, and concealment.

This year, each exhibit represents not just a culmination of my efforts but a dynamic milestone in my ongoing exploration of artistic expression, as I showcase my work in Monaco, Madrid, and Miami. These sculpture projects embody my commitment to continually evolve, refine, deconstruct, and construct my work.

“Fluid Amber” by Constantin Ford

As I prepare for these upcoming exhibitions, I am excited to share my latest creations with a diverse international audience. Each venue offers a unique opportunity to connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds, fostering a global dialogue through my art. I look forward to the inspiration and insights that these experiences will undoubtedly bring, further fueling my passion for art and its power to transcend boundaries.

In my creative process, I constantly push boundaries by experimenting with new tools, techniques, and scales. This relentless pursuit of innovation allows me to infuse fresh perspectives into my pieces, ensuring that each creation is a unique reflection of my artistic growth. Whether I’m working on a delicate, intricate piece or a monumental sculpture, I immerse myself in the physicality of the process, channeling energy and intent into every detail.

My approach is not static; it is a living, breathing evolution of ideas and forms. By deconstructing traditional methods and reconstructing them in novel ways, I challenge both myself and my audience to see art from different angles. This continuous cycle of creation, social examination and experimentation consistently keeps my work relevant, allowing me to engage deeply with contemporary themes and push the conversation forward in the art world.

Author’s bio:

Constantin Ford is a contemporary artist specializing in the transformative process of ‘subtractive sculpting’ whose work has been showcased across Europe and the United States. Ford meticulously carves a variety of materials to unveil abstract feminine forms. In her artistic exploration of the shadow self, she often tears the female form in two, symbolizing the contrast between materialized and conceptualized reality. Through these contortions, she conveys the complexities and dualities within the human experience.

Ford studied Art and Design at the New York University’s Fashion Institute of Technology (NYU FIT). She draws inspiration from nature and a diverse range of influences including Egon Schiele, Constantin Brâncuși, Georgia O’Keeffe, Lucien Freud, Jean Arp, Francis Bacon, Salvador Dalí, Louise Bourgeois, and Zaha Hadid.

Miami is a city brimming with energy, creativity, and opportunities. For those passionate about the arts, it’s a destination worth considering. With a bustling art scene, numerous events, and supportive networks, budding artists should consider moving to Miami. The city’s rich culture and lively atmosphere provide endless inspiration. Miami is home to many galleries, workshops, and schools that can help artists grow and thrive. The city offers a unique environment for creative expression, whether it’s the influence of diverse communities or vibrant street art. Find out why Miami could be the perfect place for emerging artists to develop their craft and build their careers!

Budding artists can relocate to Miami for its thriving art scene. The city is known for its dynamic galleries, studios, and art spaces. Popular art districts like Wynwood and the Design District are filled with murals, galleries, and creative hubs. Also, Miami Art Week held annually in December draws artists and art lovers from around the world, making it an ideal event for networking and inspiration. These districts offer a platform for new artists to display their work and connect with influential figures in the art world. So, with such a rich and supportive environment, Miami provides an excellent backdrop for artists to develop and showcase their talents.

Art Basel and Major Art Events

Another reason artists love Miami is that this city is home to major art events like Art Basel Miami Beach. This world-renowned event attracts galleries, artists, and collectors, providing a huge platform for exposure. Alongside Art Basel, other significant events like Art Miami and Spectrum Miami also offer opportunities to showcase work and meet influential people in the art industry. These events are great for networking and gaining inspiration from diverse art forms. That’s why participating in or even just attending these events can help artists stay updated with current trends and connect with potential buyers, collaborators, and mentors.

The city is known for its various artist groups, associations, and cooperatives that offer guidance and resources. These groups often host events, exhibitions, and workshops to help artists grow and connect. However, behind the art, every artist has a unique story and journey, and there are many opportunities to share these stories and learn from others. Being part of a supportive network allows artists to exchange ideas, find inspiration, and collaborate on projects. This supportive environment can make a significant difference in an artist’s career, providing both professional and personal growth.

We were intrigued with Mr. Courtney’s story after seeing it go viral on social media and reached out and asked him to tell us about his journey as an artist over the last 50 years. Enjoy!

Self Portraits by Phil Courtney in 1974 and 2024 respectively, courtesy of the artist

For more than 50 years, I have worked as a professional artist in both commercial and the fine arts, a painter in oils and watercolors. I am passionate about art, all art, and have been perfectly content with the support and recognition that I have received as an artist which is neither of great significance in the greater world of fine art or outstanding in financial gain. However, one small post, without agenda or intention, has seemed to blow up social media, with criticism, contention, conflict, and at the same time, praise, and respect. On several different platforms, I received over 150,000 likes, over 2,000 comments, and over 1,500 shares.

I posted side by side self-portraits painted in oils, that were done 50 years apart. One is the younger me, 21 years old while a student of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The other is the 71-year-old me, painted after 50 years of painting and noticeably, 50 years of living. I’m an old guy now.

The reactions that followed on Instagram and Facebook were from several levels. They included the juxtaposition of a young man to an old guy, the differences between the 2 styles and which was better, and my skills as a painter-from complimentary to calling me a fraud. Religion, philosophical mumblings, and creepy messages were part of the commentary.

My style provoked a host of comments such as, “It’s a photograph”; “It’s AI”; “Why bother painting this way. Look at a photo”; “Painting realistically is pointless”; and more… Granted, many of these comments were knee jerk reactions, posted anonymously behind the veil of social media, without a thought to qualifying their opinion. It amazes me why some comments were so disrespectful, but that is the freedom of posting on social media.

On the flip side, the complimentary and supportive comments were greatly appreciated. Who doesn’t like compliments? “Incredible.”; “Amazing”; “Wow!”; “This speaks volumes. The growth alone is inspirational.” “It literally says ‘Never give up, keep going and growing.’” “U make amazing paintings.” These are just a few samples from Instagram and Facebook posts.

It is important to provide some information about myself and my artwork. I paint in a realistic style. In my opinion, it is not a photo realistic style. All my work, whether in oils or watercolor, is realistic. It is what I find to be challenging and most personally satisfying. I use photographs as an initial platform for my final intention, as reference for many details like lighting, color, and texture. However, it is my intention to take my painting beyond the photo, editing as I paint, incorporating those details that will enhance the completed project and eliminating those that may clutter the composition and what I am trying to portray. There are some photographs that are best as just that, photographs. I don’t paint what shouldn’t be tampered with.

I am a graduate of The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia PA, where my focus of study was painting. Following my education, I was employed as a billboard artist for outdoor advertisers in the Philadelphia area. Working on location at heights of 60 to 160 ft, using a scaled drawing as a guide, I painted images realistically for advertisements to be viewed from the passing automobile traffic on the highways below. Billboard painting is now an art lost to digital reproductions on vinyl sheets, stretched over a frame. It was commonly thought that all billboards were posters. In fact, the largest boards were all painted, and only small signs were posted as you would wallpaper. I did not focus on my own artwork until my children were older, some 25 years after my graduation from art school.

It seems natural, that I would pursue a realistic painting style with my own work, which began with watercolors. Of course, there was a slight transition from painting 20-foot-high images to 20 inches, but I made the appropriate revisions. One irony of my story is that now, for the most part, my work is being viewed on a cell phone, approximately 6” x 3”. The average “dwell time” is 1-2 seconds for viewing cell phone images. The average time viewing a billboard while driving in a car is 6-8 seconds.

Each of my paintings is practice for the next. I continuously try new techniques, improving on what I know and have presumably mastered, making small changes to how the compositions move, and hopefully, becoming better at my craft with each painting. I continue to educate myself on the techniques of the masters or those whose work I personally admire. I am inspired by bits and pieces from many sources and each painting has small parts of this learning process. It should also be noted that combined with my art education, which can speak for itself, billboard painting provided a wealth of experience with recreating the illusion of real images with paint. My sole job in this field was to depict an image that was a replica of the real thing so that viewers would think it was a photograph. My ability to seamlessly blend colors didn’t come solely from talent. It is from 25+ years of painting in the air very quickly.

I refer to my education, experience, and intentions as an artist for those who believe my paintings are photographs or AI. They are painted. They are not digital renderings, and I don’t have any experience using AI. For those who don’t care for realism in art, you are entitled to your opinion. I love all art and I appreciate fine composition, unique use of color and materials, skillful technique, and most importantly, the final impact that a piece has on my sensibilities. The parts making up the whole and the story they invoke are a fascination to me, but the final product is the show. Art is my passion. It is what I live and breathe. People like to offer their opinions on any matter, and they have that choice regardless of how those opinions were formed. It would be nice if they would ask more questions beforehand.

John Darovitz, artist and owner of ArtbyDarovitz, is using his passion for Pointillism and thousands of colored map pins to combat his struggles with anxiety and depression. Through this custom approach, Darovitz not only finds solace but also raises awareness about mental health.

Darovitz’s journey with pin art began in grade school in Metro Detroit, where he was captivated by Georges Pierre Seurat’s Pointillism technique of applying small dots of color in patterns to create intricate paintings. Inspired by this method, Darovitz experimented with various art styles and mediums until he exclusively focused on Pointillism. He discovered that replacing a paint brush with map pins he could create pointillistic style imagery. Thousands of pins are painstakingly hand-placed, resulting in a compelling image with texture and dimension. It takes Darovitz hundreds of hours and to create one art piece.

Despite his artistic success, Darovitz faces challenges with Clinical Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, mental illnesses that surfaced later in life. Art became his therapy, providing him with an outlet for expression and a means to cope with his mental health struggles.

“I realized that creating pin art was very therapeutic and helped me get through some tough episodes of anxiety and depression,” explained Darovitz. “My mental illness would often stifle my creative process for long periods of time. Producing art has become an integral part of my ongoing recovery.”

Have you ever discovered an art exhibition in a place you wouldn’t expect, like an old warehouse or an empty retail store? These are known as pop-up galleries—temporary art spaces that inject fresh creativity into unusual environments. Untethered to any fixed location, the nomadic nature of pop-up galleries means that they can emerge anywhere, revitalizing spaces that have been overlooked. This innovative approach surprises and delights art lovers but also garners attention in the art industry, capturing the interest of those who follow cultural trends.

The Evolution of Pop-Up Galleries

Pop-up galleries have quickly become a beloved trend in the art world. Originally, these spaces were makeshift solutions for artists to showcase their work without the commitment of a permanent gallery. Today, they serve as innovative platforms for artists and curators to experiment with their surroundings and presentation styles. During the last decade, temporary galleries have hosted many new exhibits worldwide, indicating a shift in how art is consumed and appreciated.

Photo courtesy of Jessica Pamp for Unsplash

These Galleries Are Experiencing a Boom

Pop-up galleries are transforming the art market landscape by offering flexible and cost-effective alternatives to traditional art fairs. According to Artsy.net, dealers reported that 46% of their sales by value occurred at art fairs. However, the costs associated with these fairs are substantial, with dealers spending approximately $4.8 billion in 2018, an increase of 5% from the previous year. This financial strain is pushing many galleries to explore innovative models like pop-ups. These temporary spaces reduce overhead costs and allow for creative engagement with new audiences. As a result, pop-up galleries are becoming an increasingly popular choice, especially among small to mid-sized galleries seeking to maintain visibility and viability in a competitive market.

Cultural and Artistic Impact

The nomadic nature of pop-up galleries has reshaped the art landscape by offering a platform for unconventional and emerging artists. These spaces often allow for riskier, more experimental works that might not find a home in traditional galleries. By doing so, they challenge artists and audiences to rethink art’s role in society. In the bustling U.S. art market, pop-up galleries have also become a crucial venue for diversity, showcasing artists from various backgrounds who might not otherwise receive gallery representation.

Advantages of Pop-Up Galleries

These galleries offer several unique benefits that are reshaping the art scene.

Flexibility

Their flexibility allows them to occupy any space available, from a park corner to an abandoned building, making art accessible in places you’d least expect. This adaptability benefits artists by providing various contexts to display their work and engaging a broader audience.

Catering to Current Events

Another significant advantage is their ability to quickly set up in response to current events, providing a platform for artists to comment on real-time issues. This immediacy can make art feel more relevant and connected to everyday life.

Boosting Neighborhoods

By nature, pop-up galleries can rejuvenate underutilized spaces, adding value to neighborhoods and encouraging community interaction. They often create a buzz, attracting locals and tourists alike who are eager to experience art in novel settings. Such dynamic environments can dramatically increase foot traffic, which benefits local businesses and boosts economic activity in the area.

Challenges Faced by Pop-Up Galleries

While the nomadic nature of pop-up galleries offers unique opportunities, they also come with their own set of challenges.

Funding

For starters, the transient nature of these galleries can make it difficult to secure funding. Investors often hesitate to put money into ventures that might seem temporary or unstable. This funding challenge is exacerbated by the logistical complexities of setting up exhibitions in non-traditional spaces, particularly when transporting priceless masterpieces. Ensuring the safety and security of these artworks, often in spaces not originally designed for such displays, requires careful planning and significant resources.

Permanence

Another significant hurdle is the lack of permanence, which can affect how audiences perceive these galleries. Since pop-up galleries do not have a fixed location, maintaining a consistent visitor base can be tricky. Art lovers might visit once or twice, but it’s hard to build long-term visitor relationships without a permanent address. Additionally, this impermanence can impact artists’ ability to gain sustained exposure.

Impact on Community Engagement

However, these challenges do not dampen their vital role in community engagement. They often act as catalysts for local development, sparking interest and bringing people together in underutilized spaces. Here are a few ways these galleries positively impact communities:

Boosting local economy: Temporary exhibitions attract visitors who are likely to spend money at nearby businesses.

Enhancing community spaces: Pop-up galleries help beautify and revitalize neighborhoods by occupying vacant or underused properties.

Encouraging cultural dialogue: They provide a platform for artists to engage directly with diverse audiences, promoting inclusivity and understanding.

Despite these benefits, the unpredictability of operating in ever-changing venues remains intimidating for many organizers.

Future Trends

The future of these galleries seems promising, driven by their ability to adapt and innovate. Emerging technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality are beginning to play a role, allowing for digital exhibitions that can reach a global audience without the need for physical space. This technological integration solves logistical issues and opens new possibilities for interactive and immersive art experiences.

Moreover, there is a growing trend of pop-up galleries upholding handcrafted family traditions by featuring artisanal and locally crafted works. This supports local artists and preserves cultural heritage, making these temporary galleries a crucial part of the art ecosystem.

Steps to Launch a Successful Pop-Up Gallery

Setting up a pop-up gallery requires careful planning and strategic execution. Here are some ways to approach the task:

Establish clear goals, such as reaching new audiences or testing a market.

Choose a location that aligns with your target demographic and consider timing your opening with major art events to maximize foot traffic.

Negotiate terms that suit your budget and ensure the space meets all necessary legal requirements.

Prepare a detailed budget, accounting for rent, utilities, and staffing.

Focus on art and community engagement, possibly outsourcing daily operational tasks to concentrate on sales and artist relationships.

Final Thoughts on the Nomadic Nature of Pop-Up Galleries

The nomadic nature of pop-up galleries makes them more than just temporary art spaces. They are dynamic platforms that challenge traditional norms and encourage innovation in the art world. While they face various challenges, their benefits make them invaluable. As we move forward, these nomadic galleries will likely continue to evolve, further impacting artistic expression and community engagement in profound ways. Their ability to adapt and transform makes them an enduring part of the contemporary art scene, continually bringing art closer to the people.

Christy Lee Rogers is an American artist who works in the medium of underwater photography, breaking its usual conventions by shooting from above the water – the distortion of the surface producing a painterly effect of her subjects who are in the water, which has led to her photographic works being compared to paintings from the 15th Century. Christy beat 224,000 entries to win the Sony World Open Photography Award, which led to commissions from Apple and for the cover of the Lavazza calendar and most recently from multi-Oscar winning director James Cameron. Cameron commissioned her to shoot the stars of Avatar: The Way of Water: Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Kate Winslet, to raise money for The Nature Conservancy’s mission to clean the oceans.

James Cameron, who is known not only as the director of three of the five highest grossing films of all time, but also for his love of deep-sea adventuring (he was the first man to ever travel 10,908 meters down in the Pacific), science (he invented a camera lens used on Mars by NASA) and for his environmental conservation work. James’ wife, Suzy Cameron, owns a school in California, where they serve a fully plant-based diet and teach the children based on their specific interests. The school is called Muses, which is the title of a series that Christy was working on at the time James heard of her work, and the first artwork he bought from Christy was from her Muses series as a gift for Suzy.

After collecting her art and speaking on the phone, Christy and her agent, London based art dealer Fraser Scott, who had first introduced her to Cameron, suggested to him that Christy shoot the stars of Avatar to raise money for ocean conservation. Fraser offered using a promotional system that he had previously used with bands like Coldplay and The Backstreet Boys, selling their album art for children’s charities. James Cameron immediately agreed to the idea and connected Christy and Fraser to Jon Landau, the Oscar winning producer of Titanic and Avatar, who in turn connected them with the teams at Disney to arrange the shoot.

Disney flew Christy and Fraser to England where producers Alex Lake and Matt Brown Films helped Christy shoot Oscar winner Kate Winslet. Next, they went to LA where TXL Films facilitated the shoot with Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana at the famous Biltmore Hotel. Incidentally, The Biltmore was the hotel for many of iconic Ghostbusters scenes starring Sigourney Weaver.

Christy prepared for the shoot for months, discussing the concept with James Cameron, who gave her creative freedom. Then she worked on designing and commissioning the costumes, the lighting, and the plan for the feel of the shoot. While the actresses had many months of underwater training and practice while shooting Avatar: The Way of Water, Christy still had to brief and train them on her very special method, which involves lying or dancing flat at the bottom of the pool. Disney also flew in Kirk Krack for the shoot. Krack is the diving specialist who trained the actresses for Avatar and who was responsible for Kate Winslet famously holding her breath underwater for over 7 minutes and fifteen seconds, beating Tom Cruise’s previous record in Mission Impossible.

After the superstar training concluded, Christy photographed each of them underwater for around 3 – 4 hours, playing soothing, Avatar themed music and directing them via an underwater speaker. She had a team of people who she guided to shine spotlights in ever changing motions on the stars, alternating from lighting their faces to their bodies. Another team floated in fabrics towards the actresses and Kirk helped them maintain their breathing and ability to stay close to the pool’s floor. Christy’s communication to the actresses was along the lines of the feeling of the shoot – peaceful, serenity and then action and dance. It was like an underwater ballet, with each award-winning actress taking to it effortlessly and with their own deeply artistic expression. Zoe Saldaña is a highly trained dancer, and it was her acrobatic ability and natural dance acumen that helped her land the first Avatar role and shine in the performances.

After the shoot was complete, Christy spent months doing post-production, while Fraser Scott was introduced by Jon Landau and the teams at Disney to the executives at The Nature Conservancy, the charity selected in tandem with Disney for their philanthropic efforts. The reason for selecting The Nature Conservancy and their major project – Keep Our Oceans Amazing – was because of their work and goal to clean the oceans. TNC’s goal is to conserve 10% (9.9 billion acres) of the world’s ocean by 2030, and specifically Avatar and Disney’s goal with TNC is to protect 10 of our ocean’s amazing animals and their habitats, connected to the beauty of Pandora.

Fraser worked out a plan with TNC, based on his work with Coldplay and Backstreet Boys, where a limited edition of each of Christy’s artworks, which James Cameron titled The Muses of Avatar, would be sold with 100% of net proceeds going to the efforts to clean the ocean. Disney paid for the shoot and generously did not ask for any of those costs to be paid back, meaning that apart from costs like printing or administrative costs, every penny spent will go to The Nature Conservancy. The artworks were created as limited editions of 10 on acrylic at 58.5 x 72 Inches (149 x 183 cm), in various editions and sizes as museum quality prints, and finally, so they are available to all Avatar fans, as art-posters at 13 x 16 Inches (33 x 41 cm).

James Cameron said: “I have long admired Christy’s art and began collecting her works several years ago. Her unique style of shooting her subjects underwater naturally inspired me to suggest she do a special shoot with our cast.”

Jon Landau said: “Offering these unique pieces of art to benefit The Nature Conservancy through the Avatar: The Way of Water’s Keep Our Oceans Amazing campaign is a perfect synergy, and we were excited to collaborate with Christy,”

Christy Lee Rogers said: “Water is healing – it’s life itself. And as the provider of life – oxygen to all through tiny phytoplankton, our oceans need our care more than ever right now. It is a great honor to be able to help James Cameron, Jon Landau, and the Avatar and Disney teams in realizing that dream of clean and protected world oceans – through the release of these images for The Nature Conservancy.”

Melissa Garvey, Global Director of Ocean Protection at The Nature Conservancy said: “Healthy oceans are vital to the health of the planet and all living things, including people. Oceans are 90% of the habitable planet and home to more than half of all life on earth; they provide livelihoods for billions of people, producing the food we eat and half the air we breathe. Through the work of Christy Lee Rogers and the support of Disney and Avatar, we can shape a brighter future where people and nature can thrive—ensuring healthier oceans for all.”

A shared experience amongst artists is that no one ever gave us a proper business education or tools to operate as a brand. Schools don’t teach tools to help us and unless you’ve spent the time to self-educate or have had a trial by fire experience, you are out there just trying to make it work. I went to school for art and started a business while in college and had to find my way through the darkness, facing obstacle after obstacle. As artists, we often lean heavily into a do it yourself approach to everything. We create our own path by necessity. This is certainly a strength, but also something that holds back progress by trying to handle everything ourselves. Developing an additional revenue stream for artists can be a daunting task and one that’s often done poorly, or haphazardly just to have something to sell.

An important first consideration is determining who your customer is. What types of products would they use on a regular basis? Are there trends you are seeing amongst peers in what they are carrying around and using?

When starting your journey, it’s important to learn the difference between fully custom and promotional products. Promotional products are meant as giveaways or marketing tools, whereas fully custom merchandise is intended to either be sold or, if still intended for promotion, to represent your brand more faithfully by having more control.

Promotional products take an existing item, such as a water bottle that has a logo put onto it within restrictive, set sizes. Fully custom merchandise allows the control to design it, and print it exactly how it’s been envisioned, while offering a level of customization that makes it more unique. Well-designed products can serve as a tactile manifestation that represent your identity and serve as an extension of your brand.

Either option can be effective. The question is, how would you like to be seen and represented? If choosing promotional product options, look into items that could really be used. We’ve all gotten mountains of cheap promo products at events that never made it out the door. An item that gets thrown out right away is not serving you well and can be a waste of time and money.

There is no catch all solution for everyone, but there are some constants to take into account. We put so much time into developing our aesthetic, but often rush how we convey our message in other mediums. Adding merchandise to what you offer can be a positive and supportive side of your journey, but it takes energy and planning to execute properly. Good, well thought out, quality merchandise will always rise above the noise. “Artist” can mean a lot of different things, so let’s try to break down some ideas or approaches based on some broad ranges. Art oftentimes has to be adapted or adjusted to fit a new medium for merchandise. You may approach painting in oils vs acrylic with a different mindset or approach, and executing good merchandise requires the same thought process.

Traditional Artists

If you are a painter or traditional artist by trade, it can be tough to find products that represent your art properly. Your style and medium can influence what options are available that are capable of faithfully representing your work in a direct application. A painter may investigate offering high quality giclee prints, screen printed posters, notebooks, coffee mugs or full color tote bags. A sculptor could investigate making items such as enamel pins, pvc keychains, or other items that still convey a physical form beyond a flat, printed item. Unless you are looking to adapt your art to spot, solid colors, a lot of product options could be limited to items produced in cmyk. If you’d like to make t-shirts, you may need to use DTG (direct to garment) printing as opposed to silk screen printing.

Digital Artists

If you work in digital mediums, such as vector or raster images already, creating merchandise can be a lot easier. Each product will have specific requirements to adapt to, but if your art already exists in these formats, finding ways to convert them is much easier. Digital artist’s options are vast and can easily include desk mats, acrylic charms, enamel pins, shirts, patches, tote bags and more. It’s easy to find templates online or minimum specs needed within the digital realm. If you work in vector and want to make an enamel pin, seeing that the minimum line weight for metal lines in a hard enamel pin is 0.3mm can be as easy as adjusting stroke weights to work.

Galleries & Dealers

I’m sure you’ve exited through the gift shop more times than you can count, and the items often found within a museum gift shop can focus more on the general public than an artist trying to focus their branding. Items such as coffee mugs and tote bags are staples at gift shops, but instead of choosing a stock tan tote bag with the gallery logo on it, what if you were able to add in your brand as a sewn in woven tag, do custom-colored handles and print in full color? Which one sounds more interesting and visually appealing? There are options to go beyond the expected and the pricing is typically comparable. Making custom coffee mugs can also be taken a step further if you can justify an initial larger order amount of a few hundred pieces per design. Adding printing on the handle or to the underside, etc. can be little touches that make your coffee mug stand out.

Some great examples we’ve seen work well in a gallery or museum is when they are able to make pins based off of a specific exhibit’s work. Meow Wolf is a great example of a museum store that hits all of the branding checkmarks, while representing the vibe of the exhibit. Depending on the work you have on display and licensing, it can be trickier to incorporate merchandise based on an artist’s work, but it can be an exciting way to integrate the exhibit into a gift collection.

If you are catering to higher end clients as a dealer, it’s good to think about matching the quality of the items you make to be on par with something they’d use. No one shopping for expensive original art is needing a $0.30 pen with the gallery name on it. Look into higher quality options that will align with your customer better. A quality product that gets used will easily deliver 10x more impressions than a cheaper item that goes unused or discarded. A higher end product that is given out less often can still provide more value than a cheap item given to everyone.

Ultimately, it’s important to focus on the way you’d like your brand to be seen and represented. Spend time thinking about your brand story and then execute it, using good quality merchandise to support your vision. As creatives, we need to give similar attention to the way we are perceived and represented. How can you build up your footprint? You can do it by creating strong, supportive, intentional merchandise that is true to your mission.
